THE Chronicle is one of several Oldham companies which has pitched in to help an athlete get a new set of wheels.

So far, Doug Paulley has raised about £950 towards the £3,000 cost of a sports wheelchair which will allow him to compete in the York half marathon next January.

He hopes to complete the event to raise money for Disabled Sport England - but his current wheelchair is not suitable for the task.

Doug (25), a former Hulme Grammar School pupil, has had autonomic dysfunction, which affects his nervous system, since he was 12. However, he has used a wheelchair full-time only for a year or so.

He said: "My symptoms are alleviated if I exercise, and I started training in September. However, my current wheelchair is big and heavy. It isn't designed for this type of use, and the NHS does not supply sports chairs."

Doug lives in Wetherby, and is studying for an earth sciences degree with the Open University. He spends one day a week helping pupils in a primary school with computer work and also campaigns on various issues.

His father, Stuart, teaches at Grange School and is secretary of the Oldham Association of Teachers and Lecturers.

The Chronicle has donated £100 towards Doug's new wheelchair, and he is confident that he will be able to complete the half-marathon.

"If I am not fit enough it won't be from lack of trying and I have got another year to train," he said. "The only problem is it is not a half-marathon for wheelchair-users so the course will be designed for runners."
